Introduction
Towards a Concept of Spirit-empowered Leadership
The mission of Oral Roberts University is to develop Spirit-empowered leaders through whole person education to impact the world. In pursuit of this goal, the faculty are exploring the relationship between the Holy Spirit and leadership in order to articulate a Spirit-empowered leadership model. Below is a bibliography of works that address the topic of the Spirit and leadership. Many of the current resources about SEL are from from a local church perspective or ministerial perspective rather academic studies. The resources identified below are divided into the following categories:
1. Leadership by Spirit-empowered leaders - This group of resources are books written by Pentecostal and Charismatic authors. These books may or may not offer a specific Holy Spirit orientation to their works.
2. Spirit-empowered leadership - These are works that have intentionally integrated the Spirit in their framework of leadership.
3. Academic Studies of Spirit-empowered Leadership - These are works by academics who are contributing to the academic understanding of leadership.

- Leadership as Participation in the Hospitality of God by Carl Tangen Journal of Pentecostal Theology, 2008 This article sketches a Lukan model of leadership. It argues that the Lukan vision of the kingdom of God is that of a future eschatological banquet, yet present in the ministry of the church. The kingdom is a place of eucharistic worship and creates a community characterized by mutual service and multi-ethnic hospitality. It offers a vision of leaders as servants who are empowered by the Spirit to perform liturgical-charismatic leadership, sharing the hospitality of God. Leading followers of Jesus are empowered by the Spirit and yet are suffering servants that in childlike faith depend on God. Because the kingdom is not fully realized, they also need to confront false teaching and deceptive leadership that threatens the integrity and hospitality of the church. Christian leaders are accountable to God but will serve as co-judges in the final judgement. They will enter the eschatological banquet sharing the joy of their master.
- Power and Authority in Pentecostal Leadership by John Carter AJPS 12:2, 2009 This paper will examine the nature of leader authority and power in terms of both the research literature and an analysis of key biblical passages regarding Christ's teaching on the nature of Christian leadership, and by implication, the use of power. It will discuss the importance of servant leadership, moral authority, integrity, and the exercise of spiritual gifts as essential to the power base of Pentecostal leaders. The thesis of the paper is that the nature and exercise of power by Christian/Pentecostal leaders and in Christian/Pentecostal organizations must be based on an understanding and consistent application of the biblical model for leadership as taught by Christ, which involves an explicit concern for the wellbeing of those being led, and dependence on the Holy Spirit to guide both the leader and those he or she leads.
- "The Holy Spirit, Neglected Person of the Trinity, and Women's Leadership" Pam Morrison The article discusses research on the nature of the Holy Spirit and the role of women in God's ministry. It reveals the impact of neglecting the Holy Spirit on human lives. It presents information on several women around the world who became Christian leaders. It also highlights spiritual qualities and traits needed by both men and women in order to be Christian leaders.
- "Acts 2: The Divine Empowerment of Leaders" - Thomas J. Norbutus This paper is an intertextual analysis of Acts 2 that explores sources such as the New Testament, early Christian writings, Jewish apocryphal, and psuedopedigraphical texts. It identifies examples of divine leadership as explained through trust, interrelationships, and empowerment. Further, the study of intertexture differentiates the enduring, eternal character of the divine message of salvation in Acts from an inspiring secular message which may be received, processed, and even fondly remembered and passed on as history. The latter lacks the living fire of the message of eternal salvation. Personal power or the power of personality/charisma/etc. comes as close to Jesus’ power of personality as mortals can get (Bass, 1998)

- "The Tragedy of Spirit-empowered Heroes" Wonsuk Ma Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology 2.1 (2017). This study is motivated by the ongoing dilemma of the ethical failures among well-known leaders of the modern Pentecostal/Charismatic movements. Through a close look at Saul and Samson, the two charismatic leaders of the Old Testament who have the most frequent references to the Spirit of God, the study probes the internal and private layers of their experience with the Spirit of God. The intention of the Spirit’s presence includes both an internal transformation as well as external tasks. The scriptural evidence demonstrates that there is no less work of the Spirit for the internal working of the recipients than the tasks of deliverance. It is their failure to receive the private and internal transformative work of the Spirit that resulted in the total failure of the heroes.

While books on famous and infamous Pentecostal leaders abound, the corpus of research on Pentecostal leadership is sparse. This is unfortunate, as strong and innovative leadership has been instrumental for the exceptional growth of the movement—and for countless examples of abusive behaviors in Pentecostal congregations. To promote effective leadership while avoiding the destructive effects of autocratic leaders, it is necessary to better understand the dynamics of leadership within Pentecostalism.

- Towards a taxonomy of spirit -centered leadership as reflected in phenomenological experiences of entrepreneurial leaders - Jue, Arthur L. University of Phoenix, DMin Existing leadership and management models such as Weber's (1922/2001) classical bureaucracy, Taylor's (1916/2001) scientific management, and modern behavioral or contingency-based models (Burns & Stalker, 1961/2001; Hesselbein, Goldsmith, & Beckhard, 1997) appear insufficient for coping with increasing postmodern complexity, fragmented ideologies, social chaos, and global interconnectedness (Anderson, 1992; Borgmann, 1993; Handy, 1998; Hatch, 1997). As dot-coms have collapsed, workers have become increasingly alienated and widespread burnout has proliferated (Briskin, 1996; Maslach & Leiter, 1997), many practitioners have begun searching for more radical Kuhnian paradigms (Reynolds, 1971) to attend to spirit by subscribing to alternative leadership models such as spirit-centered leadership. Spirit-centered leadership has also been emphasized as a critical success factor for leaders of entrepreneurial endeavors (Monaughan, 2000; Sfeir-Younis, 2002). The intent in this study was to identify elements of spirit-centeredness in the life experiences of entrepreneurial leaders. A second objective was to compare resulting themes against (1) a proposed taxonomy for spirit-centered leadership, consisting of relational attributes clustered around modes of knowing , being, and doing, and (2) interviews with a peripheral sample of subject matter experts. Attributes of spirit-centeredness were explored in the lives of entrepreneurial leaders and subject matter experts via thematic analysis of horizonal experiences, a qualitative transcendental phenomenological approach to inquiry based on Moustakas' (1994) modified van Kaam method. Hermeneutic analysis of relevant literature also helped to uncover characteristics of spirit-centered leadership by shaping the taxonomy that was proposed. Phenomenological analysis revealed numerous intersubjective themes, and the resulting composite textural-structural descriptions of lived experiences formed an integrated characterization of the nature, role, and influence of spirit-centered leadership in entrepreneurial organizations. The taxonomy of spirit-centered leadership was also validated qualitatively as representative of respective phenomenological experiences. Implications of this research centered on its ability to facilitate common language for increasing the understanding of spirit-centered leadership. Moreover, by advancing actionable knowledge (Argyris, 1996) of effective spiritual perceptions and practices among leaders, this research created a possible framework for assisting with the integration of spirit-centered leadership in entrepreneurial firms. Recommendations for further studies and approaches to enhancing research in this area were provided as well.

- Charismatic, Ideological, & Pragmatic (CIP) Model of Leadership: A Critical Review and Agenda for Future Research In The Leadership Quarterly February 2019 30(1):96-110 Criticisms of the domin ant leadership perspectives in the literature are increasing and, as such, a growing number of scholars are calling for more complex and conceptually sound theories of leadership. With a multi-faceted perspective on effective leadership, detailed conceptual underpinnings, and increasing body of empirical support, the Charismatic, Ideological, and Pragmatic (CIP) model of leadership has the potential to address many of these concerns and substantively contribute to our understanding of effective leadership. Despite such advantages, however, wide scale proliferation of the model remains elusive. As such, this effort provides the first comprehensive review of the CIP model to analyze its potential to expand our understanding of leadership in science and practice. In doing so this review frames and organizes the existing CIP literature, identifies key strengths of the model, addresses key limitations of the model, and outlines future research opportunities that would benefit from adopting a CIP perspective.

Roberts This examination of the rhetorical form and logic of 2 Corinthians 10–13 accounts for the macro-rhetoric of the discourse, showing how it responds coherently and potentially effectively to the criticism that Paul is a weak leader and to the effect of rival ministers at Corinth. The discourse both denies and agrees with the criticism: Paul is not weak in any way that prevents his performing his apostolic commission; but Paul is weak in ways essential to his re-presenting Christ to the Corinthians (e.g., he is weak rhetorically, in his humble and low-status presence, and in his avoiding severity and embracing “the meekness and gentleness of Christ” as he expresses authority). In this positive weakness lies Paul's conflict with his sophistic rivals, whose hubristic manner of leadership has de facto imported another Jesus, spirit, and gospel into the church.

- A case study: The effect of the Holy Spirit on church growth and leadership development - Nam, Chun Woo Regent University - DMin Natural growth of a church is the result of the activity of the Holy Spirit. This is a clear proposition upon which everyone can agree. Concerning church growth, it may be asked, “How can we properly follow the lead of the Holy Spirit?” This doctoral dissertation attempts to answer this question. To resolve this question, we should first investigate who the Holy Spirit is. In order to do this, the Bible must be studied. The results of this study cause us to conclude that we cannot easily define who the Holy Spirit is because of the limitations of human recognition and intelligence. We can however, perceive the energy of the Holy Spirit and experience His activities because of God's grace: “for every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” To address how we can follow the Holy Spirit in church growth, the history of the Pentecostalism has been investigated. The Church is growing tremendously and uniquely in both the East and the West, overcoming cultural barriers. To address church growth, Konghang Methodist church will be analyzed. The conclusion of the investigation and analysis leads us to the “internal combustion-extension principle.” Internal combustion means being filled with the Holy Spirit through a devotional religious life, for example, studying the Bible, praying and so on. This should however, extend outwardly. This is the primary resource for growing churches. This is a principle of growth for every church. A four-step strategy for church growth may be seen in accordance with Acts 1–2 where the disciples are charged with a mission, they come together and maintain community, are filled with the Holy Spirit, and work to fulfill their mission. Continuous growth of a church can only be come from the uninterrupted completion of these four steps.

- Spirit-empowered women in church leadership: An undergraduate course for southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, TX, with local church implementation - Fulthorp, Deborah Assemblies of God Theological seminary - DMin Various ministers and laity within the Assemblies of God (AG) misunderstand the Pentecostal moorings of women in church leadership. Whether this misunderstanding is due to ignorance, misconceptions, or influence from cessationist or reformed theologies, it leads to a lack of education among local church constituents as well as among AG ministers. To counteract the missing component of Pentecostal women actively engaging in all levels of church leadership, this project established a biblical-theological foundation and general review of contemporary literature and incorporated that research into a curriculum and course for use in local churches as well as Assemblies of God institutes of higher education. Furthermore, the project exposed the challenges of women in ministry through surveys, brought about measurable changes, and educated ministers and laity on how the Spirit empowers women for all levels of church leadership. The intervention and research efforts resulted in a paradigm shift to understand the Spirit’s inclusion of both men and women into vocational ministry. The project resulted in: 1) the establishment of a strong biblical-theological foundation for women in church leadership, 2) a course usable for an institute of higher education as well as the local church, and 3) a course specialized for training Spirit-empowered women for ministry and leadership.

- An Examination of Leadership Charisma From the Perspective of the Apostle Paul and Max Weber With a View Toward an Ecclesial Charismatic Leadership Theory : a Sociorhetorical Interpretation of 1 Corinthians 12 - Proquest. PHD Regent This qualitative study examines the concept of charisma found in 1 Corinthians 12 with a view toward exploring an ecclesial charismatic leadership theory. The sociorhetorical method of interpretation is the primary exegetical method used to explore 1 Corinthians 12. The specific concepts of spiritual gifts presented in 1 Corinthians 12 have long been examined by theologians throughout the history of the church. However, very few articles or books have considered the Pauline concept of charisma as the power and authority the Holy Spirit provides to each individual within the ecclesia. It is the charisma that not only brings the spiritual gift but also provides the power and authority for the individual to provide leadership within the ecclesia through the use of his or her particular spiritual gift for the common good. Paul is credited with coining the term charisma which is grossly misappropriated by Weber (1903/1978). Paul considered power and authority within charisma to be from God and immutable, while Weber described power and authority as being held by the followers who retain the potential for withdrawal by the followers. The sociorhetorical interpretation of 1 Corinthians 12 reveals a model for ecclesial charismatic leadership that begins with God who provides the charisma to each individual of the ecclesia through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit provides each individual with a particular spiritual gift. Once the individual understands his or her particular spiritual gift and expresses the gift, two things happen. First, the individual fulfills the individual goal for which his or her spiritual gift is given. Second, as each individual expresses his or her spiritual gift, the organizational goal of the common good of the ecclesia is achieved. Therefore, the expression of each individual's spiritual gift results in greater organizational commitment for the individual and greater overall organizational effectiveness of the ecclesia.
- An Examination of Leadership Principles in 1 Peter in Comparison to Authentic and Kenotic Models of Leadership This study examined three constructs for leadership—authentic leadership, kenotic leadership, and principles of leadership—from the Christian Scriptures in the pericope of 1 Peter. The study of authentic leadership as a contemporary theory of leadership was drawn from the leadership literature. However, the study of kenotic leadership and principles from 1 Peter was drawn from an exegetical examination of particular sections of Christian Scripture, as well as from the leadership literature. This exegetical process was developed in the light of sociorhetorical interpretation and was applied particularly to 1 Peter for a preliminary examination of leadership principles as found in this section of Christian Scriptures. In this research, ten principles of leadership were found from the text of 1 Peter and then compared to kenotic and authentic leadership. In this comparison, some profound similarities with authentic leadership were discovered, but there was enough dissimilarity to declare them different conceptual frameworks for leadership. In the analysis of kenotic leadership, there was one difference with principles of leadership as found in 1 Peter, but the evidence was that these two conceptual frameworks for leadership were profoundly similar and connected with each other. They were both drawn from the Christian Scriptures, sharing many attributes of leadership, including a call for a radical departure in the use of power, as well as issues of ontological change in the leader.
- Developing a Four-Vector Model of Empowerment by Examining Pauline Leadership Attributes: Implications for Secular Leadership Theory One of the most intriguing and oft discussed aspects of leadership is the construct known as empowerment. For the past seven decades, this paradigm has been investigated, tested, and discussed in a myriad of ways covering a multitude of leadership disciplines. Though there is a great deal of material within the empowerment literature, precious little research has been conducted examining the potential connectivity between secular perspectives of empowerment and those aspects of the construct that include Christian theology. Specifically, this research examines the potential congruency and interdisciplin arity between secular theory and Christian theology as it pertains to the empowerment strategy implemented by the Apostle Paul. As a church leader, many of Paul's texts reflect his approach to empowering the leaders of the organization in his absence. Using critical/historical research methodology, we sifted data drawn from Pauline texts through a series of methodological filters in order to best reveal, examine, and report pertinent results. The Christian Church has a 2,000-year record of global success that cannot help but to influence and enhance secular leadership theory and, therefore, vastly strengthen both of these important disciplines.
